Bigger, Better, Stronger

4 October 2005

The new hurricane mandate is this: As of today, all future hurricanes will be named Martha, as in Martha 1, Martha 2, Martha 3, and so on.

The reason: Omnimedia giant, Martha Stewart, is a human whirlwind of unparalleled proportion (except for Ted, et al), and thus, it is time to recognize and honor her as the power that she is.

I mean cripes, the woman is barely out of her ankle bracelet (that would be the electronic version and not a Me&Ro peace-bead anklet) and she’s working on launching her third telly show!

One can’t help but respect a force of nature like that. The woman personifies the adage “making a comeback.”

Next time one of the NFL, beefcake footy players does his hamstring for the season, his return ought to be coined “doing a Martha.”

I had my own mini Martha-comeback experience, which I recount in Baking at Midnight. You see I was a very happy employee at Nordstrom, where I worked in the Personal Touch Department as a personal shopper-for some big name (prima dona) clients. But then I was laid off!

No more employee discount designer outfits. No more whirlwind trips to New York to view seasonal launches of fave designer lines. And it all happened last winter-not good-since I’m predisposed to bouts of SAD (that would be Seasonal Affective Disorder or winter time blues).

Gawd it was a tricky time, though of course to hurricane-survivor bloggers my former misery must sound completely self-indulgent.

Must admit, I didn’t feel much sympathy for Martha’s misery when interned in the federal women’s camp she was disposed to bouts of muffin baking, however dull and confining her surroundings.

Coming back bigger, better and stronger is not what Louisiana and Texan natives are hoping the weather will do next hurricane season (because no one really wants to call all future hurricanes Martha 1, 2, 3 etc.).

But whether we hoped for it or not, that is precisely what Martha did, she made a come back, and that’s precisely what I managed to do too (after my SAD subsided).

Here’s to personal comebacks in the realm of Bigger, Better & Stronger!
