New Year Boobs

8 January 2007

I had a mammogram last week.

Yep, started out the New Year waiting anxiously in “Radiography” browsing out-of-date mags and watching a woman next to me knit.  She must have been nervous too.

Beaty always had a knitting project on the go when we took family car trips.  Driving long distances - with lead-footed Frank at the wheel - gave her a knee tic, controllable only if she focused head and hands, hence the knitting.

Because Beaty knitted, I used to think it a bit mum, like high-waisted cotton undies and girdles.  But mum activities along lines of knitting are in-vogue once more (and have been for a few years).

Everything old is new again!  That would be especially true in fashion, and in music.

I wish someone would do something about making new again the music of the ‘80’s.  A Flock of Seagulls - remember them?  Mellow pop sung by a bunch of British blokes sporting bouffy hair and Mighty Mouse shoulders — yep, that was the 80’s!

Julia Roberts in Pretty Women was the epitome of jumbo hair and padded shoulders.  In real life (versus movie land), she was also one of the It Girls photographed by People Magazine knitting while taking a break on set.

A bevy of starlets were photographed following suit, and voila, knitting is incredibly cool again.

I’m not sure the woman sitting outside radiography was into knitting for the cool factor.  Actually she was the support person for her friend who I overheard saying, “It’s an ultra sound this time round.”

Having a mammogram is anxiety provoking enough.  When you hear someone is having a problem seen on a mammogram further evaluated, you can’t help wondering if they’re okay.  And then wondering, am I going to be okay?

Fortunately, my mammogram was fine.  “No sign of cancer,” the report said.  Not this year, anyway, but next year?  Gawd, I’m gunna develop a tic if I project ahead.

Hmm, think I’ll take up knitting.

And stick to a low carb diet, and consume omega 3’s, vitamins E & D, and do monthly breast checks, and have an annual mammogram … Everywoman’s New Year resolution for preventing breast cancer.
