Kids & Passion
15 January 2007
Have you listened to a child lately, taken note as they’ve talked about their dreams and passions?
I didn’t think kids had passions, I knew they had hobbies. I’ve always associated passion with grown ups, more specifically, two grown-ups in hot pursuit of skin-on-skin activity.
But duh, passion isn’t just for the bedroom; after all, we also feel passionate about non-sexual activities.
Bindi Irwin, daughter of crocodile Steve, introduced me to the idea that kids, like grown-ups, feel passionate about work and play.
I read that 8-year-old Bindi is determined to continue her dad’s legacy. “Saving wildlife and singing and dancing are my passions,” she said.
What great passions!
Makes me wonder what I was excited about when I was 8.
Hmm, vaguely remember feeling pretty thrilled by The Brady Bunch and Bewitched. Gawd, I guess my passion had something to do with parking my bum in front on the telly.
Bindi is a budding conservationist. I was bewitched by a bunch of Brady’s. Kids today are either incredibly ambitions or appropriately concerned about the future of their world.
But that’s an awfully big concern to have when you’re 8, worrying about the environment. So I’m really glad Bindi is also into singing and dancing.
In fact I think she should focus on her passion for the performing arts for now, leave worrying about the environment to us oldies.
Therein is the real message in Bindi’s resolve to carry on her dad’s work: draw lots of attention to animal conservation and stir the oldies into a passion about making sure their kids have something to sing and dance about today, and tomorrow!
Bindi has another passion, but I wanted to leave the best for last.
She loves her country: “I think Australia is so good and all the people are so nice!”
Today, one of the junior members of my tribe reminded me that I too love my country and want it to be good and nice and beautiful and safe for generations to come.
What are the kids in your life reminding you to feel passionate about?
