Good Enough

20 March 2007

I saw a bloke in a white business shirt, red bow tie and suspenders commuting the other morning in a black Saab with a bumper sticker that read, “Failure is Not an Option.”

Shortly thereafter, one of the girlfriends told me she had come across an online Match profile of a bloke who uses the name, “High Thread Count.”

If you’re contemplating a date with a fella along lines of the two above, think twice before buying a new dress.

When people demand so much of life such that they cannot tolerate disappointment or scratchy sheets, chances are even your fab self clad in a cute frock will fail to measure up.

Moreover, why would you want to spend time with someone who isn’t open to the grace of “good enough,” and the utilitarian nature of low thread count budget bed linens?

I mean anyone who holds the bar high to the degree that they cannot entertain having a very human experience along lines of failure, is probably part android anyway!

Uptight axioms and pseudonyms deny the reality that most of us bear an invisible tagline that reads, “messy human.”

I am a messy human.  I’m sure you are too.

At times, we all stuff up, make mistakes and fall short of the goals we set for ourselves - that’s life.

If there were no messy moments we’d be absent those experiences that show us how to do it differently next time.  None of us is perfect, but the good thing is we all have the capacity to learn from our imperfections.

With that in mind, it pretty much goes without saying that my bumper sticker and date choice is, “Messy Human.”
