Shout Out to Clutter

2 July 2007

You know how wannabe Buddhists drape Tibetan prayer flags at the entrance to their homes?  Well I’ve done that.

Strung those lovely yellow, green, red, white and blue flags across the entryway to my walk-in closet that is.

Apparently, hung outside homes and places of spiritual practice, the prayer flags bring happiness and prosperity to the residents and devotees.

And since the area in front of my closet has been a place where I’ve had some of my biggest challenges, i.e. trying to figure out what to wear, I’ve conducted a spiritual practice of sorts.

It went something along lines of, “Help … OM … Help …OM.”

Now of course, one need not struggle because Ask A Gay Man, William Sledd, is readily available on YouTube to help those of us who accumulate clothes-as-needed find order in our closets.

Will would feign drama-queen if he saw inside my closet and drawers; it’s a fastidious young gay man’s nightmare: unorganized, un-sized, un-color coded, no rules, no arrangements …

Just one big shout out to clutter!

Yes my closet’s a mess, but in contrast, I’m definitely not a proponent of cluttering up the body with a disorderly look.

I agree with our boy Will that a good look is the result of incorporating your own personal style with cleverly put together, mix-and-match, no-name and brand items.

I do that.  But how I manage to pull a statement of personal style out of muddle and mess is a mystery.  (Having lots of discount designer pieces from the old days working at Nordstrom does help.)

It might have something to do with the equation of creativity such that often times amazing things are born of jumble.  Order out of chaos comes to mind - like the evolution of our solar system …

There was a big bang, a lot of mess, and eventually the earth rotating about its own axis creating the unending order of night and day.

In which case, think I’ll chuck the prayer flags and trust that though Will counsels a codified closet, greater genius is more likely to emerge from a cluttered one.

Perfect timing. Really needed to hear that often times amazing things are born out of jumble. Feeling especially jumbled of late. Trying to ride it out… good reminder of the creative birthing process and the discomfort and chaos at times before the creation melds! I tell my clients this all the time… We do need to listen to ourselves on occasion and good friends always come up with the perfect advice. Thanks, Tildy!
